Right, I could go off on a tangent here so I'll do my best to rein myself in now and then
First up and you've probably experienced this
I certainly have
The conversation kinda goes like this
Customer "do you have any discounts"
Me "No sorry, I didn't get worse over night; I got better so no the price as gone up"
I think you get my point here.
If your PT discounts regularly they are basically saying they are -
Lazy.
Lack any ethics.
Have no passion.
Don't want improve their knowledge.
So they accept that they are becoming a lot worse of a PT!
They lack any confidence in their ability to get you results so they throw the discount sale
trick at you to try and convince you to become a client
Other than you going to the other Personal Trainer.
The most popular discount is "buy 8 PT sessions get 2 FREE."
A word of caution for you.
If a PT is selling sessions to you rather than a program (a program gets you from point a
to point b) he is just asking you to turn up for a workout.
No strategy.
No assessment.
No plan.
It's a bit like, having a sat nav and not using it, thinking that you can out smart it
When, you actually have no clue where you are going.
Cos, this is frustrating the life out of me whilst I am writing this
I am going to give you yet another word of caution.
So...
You buy the 8 PT sessions and get 2 FREE
BUT get this, you can use them whenever you like....
That's like being prescribed medication and you deciding to take it ALL in one go and not follow the directions of what the doctor told you.
Enough said on this.
So your trainer just admitted that they got worse.
The only way this PT can go now, is lower.
Lower price.
When they reach the lowest.
They then become a commodity.
Lots of clients (on first sight makes them look good)
But causes you a ton of pain.
They cannot look after you.
You're now interacting with people you don't really like.
It becomes A DIS SERVICE to you
Same applies to the low budget gyms
But that email is for another day...
On the flip side to this
It was confirmed to me the other day in a passing conversation with my hair dresser (Joe
Hind at Barrie Stephen - highly recommend)
That the standard of PT's in the health clubs still remain the same all what 4-5 years ago since I last worked in one.
Stay with me on this, and just imagine this for one minute.
You meet with your PT for the first time.
No warm welcome.
Not even a smile (he's probably pissed at the long hours, early starts, back to back one 2 one's (if your trainer is doing one 2 one, then I'd escape straight away - I'll explain in another email)
No eye contact.
Didn't even ask how your day was.
Just asks you to get on the bike and cycle.
Even leaves you for few minutes whilst you get started on your own.
Comes back with a coffee.
Drinks this whilst standing there with you.
Presses a button or two ... on his mobile phone (texting) and asks you "are you feeling it"
At this point I must point out...
YOUR PT has no idea what workout they are going to provide you.
They are practically thinking about it whilst you are on the bike.
How do I know - well, check if they have a piece of paper, pencil and a program to hand.
Did you check?
Was that a "nope they didn't"
Told ya :)
Back to workout.
You finally get moved on to another machine.
Possibly a rower... because the PT gets to sit down as well
No motivation.
No words of encouragement.
More interested in his phone.
Or whats going on around him.
And oh yes, his coffee with two sugars.
Did he advise you not to have this??????
Cut a long story short before I kill myself of frustration that these so called PT's are damaging the reputation of our industry (which has the potential to be life changing) and gives the perception of what having a PT is like.
So when you come to me.
I can understand why you ask for a discount.
Especially after that lump of crap you've just experienced.
It gets worse for you.
Because of this standard.
Your results are going to take forever.
Its like travelling to the other side of the world by bus - its cheaper, slower and possibly the worst experience you can imagine.
Or you can travel by business class on Virgin Atlantic.
Its more expensive but you get to their faster, and the experience is to die for!!!
RWL is the latter by the way.
Remember, I took the industry and turned it on its head
The normal PT is the bus journey so I kind of get why you don't want to invest in much in a PT or gym.
I wouldn't
Have I mentioned that we have IFS Personal Trainer of the Year 2013 at our place?
Well, we do and he goes by the name of Sam Hanney (my brother)
He'll be responsible for designing your program (your navigation system)
The best in the industry helping you.
Surely, that can't be cheap?
Of all of the information I have shared with you today.
I'll finish on this.
The biggest problem in our industry and PT's alike
They've passed the PT course (remember, I told you about this in a previous email, not the best)
And they then think they're too good to fail
Or that the course is all they need to know, and they choose not to learn anymore.
What they need to do is
And make sure you charge for this :)
Because it will be the most valuable information they have heard
They need to look outside of the fitness industry to learn
Because the fitness industry is failing.
This was my light bulb moment all those many moons ago.
